Cop, Drop, Flip or Double Dip
Let’s play a game of Cop, Drop, Flip or Double Dip with upcoming sneaker releases for the week of January 31st, 2021.
Those of you familiar with sneaker culture have probably heard the phrase “Drip, Flip, or Skip” coined by Sole Collector’s YouTube show Full Size Run or the “Cop or Drop” IGTV series by Highsnobiety. To not completely copy these ideas at face value, I mixed them together and added my own category. For those not tuned into sneaker culture, the description of how this game works is below.
The rules of the game are simple: I go through each sneaker release coming this week and decide if you should Cop, Drop, Flip, or Double Dip that sneaker.
Cop means I like it and want to add it to my personal collection regardless of resell value or potential. depending on how much I like the shoe, I may even recommend paying resell to acquire it
Drop means I don’t like it and will not being trying to grab it, even to resell.
Flip means I don’t want to add the sneaker to my collection, but I will be trying to grab it strictly to resell.
Double Dip is a combination of Cop and Flip. It means that I want to add the sneaker to my collection AND try to resell another pair.
Welcome back recap: I’m sorry for my prolonged absence from this blog! Couple work/life changes that forced me to figure out a new schedule for writing this article. But I’m back baby! The last two weeks that I missed were really weird. Shoes got leaked, confirmed to release, then delayed and delayed again. Honestly its hard to even keep track of what actually released. Some stores dropped their stock of dunks while others removed them from their release calendars all together. So lets just jump back in on a clean slate. Here’s a list of the best sneakers that did for sure, 100%, drop over the last two weeks:
Notre Nike Dunks in Navy and Orewood (Notre Store exclusive color way)
Street Hawker Nike SB Dunks Lows
Now on to this week. Sneakers are listed in chronological order according to release date. All drop times are in PST. Release information is up to date as of Sunday 1/31/21. Let’s get into it.
Nike Dunk High x Ambush Comic Fuchsia (Feb. 4th at 7am on SNKRS) — $180
FLIP. Big flip. No idea why people like these or the black/white colorway that released a month or so ago. I think there’s a lot of people that are just trying to support anything Yoon Ambush creates. Which is cool, but sometimes I think we need to hold designers accountable for their misses and not support bad projects just because of name value. Go for bae sizes. I predict these to be much more popular with women than men.
Air Jordan 12 Low Black and Metallic Gold (Feb. 6 at 7am on SNKRS) — $190
DROP. Oof. No me gusta nada. Is this supposed to be a Chinese New Year thing? The 12 is already an uncommon model that has faded out of relevance. The low version is even more obscure. Its just so hard to cut the top off a Jordan and expect it to look good. The only models that can pull it off are the Jordan 1 low and Jordan 11 low. But that’s only specific colorways. OGs will flame me for that 11 low take but I’ve always liked them. Never owned a pair but something about them is appealing to me. Anyway hard pass on this 12 here.
Air Jordan 5 Anthracite — (Feb. 6 at 7am on SNKRS) — $190
DROP. I don’t hate this colorway at all. Its essentially a GR release of the Off-White 5s, which were Complex’s Sneaker of the Year in 2020. Its really the Jordan 5 in general. I’ve never been a fan of the silhouette. In the hierarchy of classic Jordan models, the 5 is near the bottom. Just above the 12s for me. This shoe will sell out but releasing on SNKRS, every footsite and local stores, means there won’t be much if any resale value. If 5s are your thing, I won’t judge you for copping. But I do think there’s better shoes you could put that money too. UNLV Dunks for example are going for just $200 and haven’t even released on SNKRS yet.
Other news: Stussy is releasing another round of Nike apparel on Feb. 4th. Its a puffy down filled tie dye aesthetic. Not very exciting. It’s a very light week. I tried to find non-Nike shoes that were worth mentioning but couldn’t come up with anything. I’m sure something will be announced mid-week. If that happens I’ll post my thoughts on my instagram story so make sure you’re following me there @stanley_tools. I also post outfits if you’re looking for inspiration on how to style all the new sneakers you’re coping because of this blog.
Next week preview: Dunks. Paper Boys x New Balance 991. Valentines day Air Force Ones. I think..? Honestly not sure. Like I said, everything’s been getting postponed and moved around. Nothing is confirmed as of now. We’ll see next week.
